Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is perhaps the main cause of chronic diarrhea in adults. The diagnosis is made on the basis of a number of clinical criteria ( Rome III criteria ) that refer to a combination of clinical signs, the main symptom abdominal pain and / or discomfort in the abdomen, combined with intestine problems. The criteria for the diagnosis say little about the nature and cause of the condition.
Introduction Darwin Smith

In irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can be distinguished basically three types of patients: a group with predominantly constipation , a group with predominantly  diarrhea  and a group with periods of constipation alternating with diarrhea.

Criteria for the diagnosis of IBS
Abdominal pain or indigestion (discomfort or pain in the abdominal area) at least three days per month during the past three months, in combination with at least one of the following criteria:

relief of symptoms after  bowel movement
change in the frequency of stools
sudden change in the consistency of the faces

The shape mainly with diarrhea is characterized by a bowel movement with a softer consistency (mushy or liquid), that is at least 25% of the patients take, and the absence of a hard stools or no bowel movement for a few days.
